You have time. Think for a moment. Why are you a believer? (Seriously, stop reading and think how you might respond to someone asking.)
…………………. Ready?
Without sitting down face to face with you, I am almost 100% certain you would begin telling me how you got saved. In other words, you would share your testimony. But please hear me out.
I did not ask you how you became a Christian. I asked you why.
Why did you answer a different question?
Some of you see what I am doing. Others might still be asking, “What’s wrong with sharing my personal testimony?”
And my answer to you, “There is absolutely nothing wrong with sharing your beautiful story of redemption. Please share it, but answer the question being asked first!”
Look, I know our personal testimonies can be one of the greatest evangelism tools we carry with us. And many of you reading this will never be faced with someone who requires more of an explanation. After becoming a believer, I had multiple opportunities to pour into young adults through ministry. I watched dozens of young adults give their life to Christ because of my testimony. I gave the how and not the why. And God used it!
But what if someone asks you Why Jesus? Why Christianity? Why not Buddhism, Hinduism or Islam?
And even then, I know many of you could answer confidently about Jesus and His selfless act of love for all the world. And again, you may not be questioned beyond that point.
But what if you are? Could you give a reasonable defense for the faith within you? Could you give a reason for Christianity if it was not solely based on your personal experience?
Are their facts that back up your beliefs? I mean, you gave your life to Christ but did He even truly exist? You say the bible says …. but how do I even know if the bible is true?
If you do have the chance to speak to that one person who needs more than the answer of the bible says so or this is how I became a believer, could you?
It’s not that you will have to, but are you prepared to?
My heart was heavy this morning, friends. It was heavy for my family and my children. It was heavy for my friends and their families. It was heavy for those I don’t even know. It’s heavy because so many of us are solely basing our faith on what we are told as truth, without really examining it for ourselves. It’s heavy because I see more and more God-loving servants who see no reason to give a reasonable defense for what they believe.
For the next few weeks (or blog posts, whichever may come first) I am writing the Why Series? If interested in following, please make sure to sign up for email updates!
